Capitalism and massive production have always given workplace safety and health departments a lot to talk about. Silicosis is another health disease that still remain in the united states in significant numbers. Construction, mining, sandblasting or other industries, 1.7 million (at least) is the number of workers that are exposed to crystalline silica in the United States as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
What is Silicosis
Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhaling too much of a naturally-occurring crystal that is called silica dust and which can be found mainly in rocks and sand, which means sandblasters, glass workers, and mining workers are exposed to this type of dust.
According to MedlinePlus, there are three types of silicosis : Chronic, Accelerated and Acute silicosis.
Like every progressive disease, looking for the starting point from which the disease comes is the first step to limit the exposure. In order to prevent the disease from getting worse, you must stop the source of silica exposure. Healthline reported that there is no specific medical treatment to silicosis. Only respiratory infections and symptoms can be treated or reduced by using antibiotics and cough medicine.Oxygen masks are also used by some silicosis sufferers.
Other methods to prevent Silicosis :
- When drilling, grinding, cutting use wet methods and water sprays.
- For cleaning surfaces, avoid using compressed air
- Eat and drink away from crystalline silica dust.
- Use local ventilation and blasting cabinets.
